ADSD Chocolate Cherry Collab is HERE!

Well I finished my kit at about 5pm, just in time to upload and get my post ready to go live by midnight! My portion of the ADSD kit is loaded with elements and 12 papers, plus an Alpha in upper case and some punctuation. I didn't do lower case because I figured that this kit was big enough, plus most people just use Alphas for titles anyway. I broke it down to 4 parts so you can grab what you want. This kit is Personal Use only please due to so many CU resources I used from other fantastic designers! (See credits in TOU). The previews and links are at the bottom of the post, grab them and continue on the blog train to grab everyone else's great kits!

Make Your Own Gems PS/PSE Shapes and Styles

Well, those of you who downloaded the Big Gem set and use Photoshop or PSE can probably save a bunch of HD space and recycle bin them. I decided to share my style set with you all plus a set of custom gem shapes I made in CS3. Included in the .zip is a tutorial on how to use these to make your own gems. I really spent too much time on this today and need to get my kit finished that goes up at midnight tomorrow so I am going to sign off now and get busy! And for those of you who can't use the .asl or .csh file you can download the pattern I used and recolor it in your program to make your own gems if you can find that useful. I'm sorry I didn't have time to make .pngs of all the shapes but hopefully you can find some to use if you google it!

Or download the gem pattern tile HERE (3" x 3") and use in your own program to make a pattern for a gem. Alternate download for Tiles is HERE since Filesavr appears to be down.

BIG Ole CU Gem Set

Well I had a lot of fun playing with the gems yesterday and I did tell you that there would be more to come and today's freebie is HUGE. In the .zip are 10 different shaped gems in 10 different colors. Also included is a silver and gold frame for each shape that you can put on the gem and a frame template so you can choose your own layer style to apply to the setting for your gem. I told you it was big! Each gem is about the same size as shown on the preview and how it would look on a 3600 x 3600 layout. I did resize the round one down for the preview. And I got lazy with some of the shapes. I started with a hard chisel bevel on a couple of the shapes but then figured you can add your own bevels to the jewels to get the look you want. I have plans to make some different settings (like yesterday's sick pin) for the jewels too so keep an eye out for them in the future! Also, feel free to recolor the "diamond" color one to match your layouts or kits too! I really think these jewels turned out pretty and am so thankful I found angelize's fantastic Filter Forge filter to make them! Click on the preview for a big close-up pic of the gems.

Thanks also to all of you who provided feedback on my elements. I am very perplexed about how the elements are distorted for one reader and not the rest of you but I will continue to make my elements as I have been and hope that we figure it out eventually!

CU Heart Gems

Keeping with the Valentine theme today I have a set of gems that I created with this great filter I found on Filter Forge called Gemstones by angelize.  I love this filter and can't believe I haven't found it before!  Expect to see lots more gem shapes and possibly some PS gem styles in the future!  The set includes the colored gems and settings in gold and silver.  I also played around with making a stick pin today that I threw in the .zip too.  The actual pin is intact but I cut out a part of it for this preview and used the dodge and burn tools to make it look like the pin was going through the cloth.  Cool eh?

StickPinExample

I received an email from a reader today who stated that my elements that were smaller than 2" (buttons, alphas, etc) were unusable to her because they were pixilated.  Do any of you experience this?  She said that she was blowing the elements up to 200% which in my opinion was going to make any element unusable, regardless of it's size.  Can you guys weigh in on this for me?  I hate to think that my things are not being used because they appear distorted.  But this is the first time I have heard of this and I have used my own elements in kits and they seem fine to me, and I know others have used my buttons and other small elements in kits and have not complained about them being pixilated   I would greatly appreciate any comments, good or bad!

Anywho, I gotta get ready for work.  Here's the preview and links for today's freebie:

CU Vintage Heart Doiley

Today's freebie is another one of my Antique Store finds.  I was going to wait and put it in my kit for the ADSD Collab that comes on February 1st but that kit will be a Personal Use Only kit and I wanted to offer the doiley as CU in case you wanted to use it for your Valentine kits.  Just a little doiley in the shape of a heart.  I may be MIA for a couple days finishing up my kit that comes out on the 1st but I hope to have at least one or two more freebies before then.  You will just have to check back in to see!  Drop shadow on the Doiley is for preview purposes only.

CU Simple Bows

For today's freebie I have a set of simple little CU Bows that I photographed and extracted.  Of course they aren't really that little!  How they are shown in the preview is actual size on a 3600 x 3600 canvas. And that's after I resized them smaller!  That's what happens when you photograph with a 12mp camera I guess.  Please feel free to recolor to match your layouts or kits!

Build a Flower .csh and .asl for PS/PSE PLUS .png and image tiles!!

Who's ready for spring?  I know I am.  It got really cold here again in the midwest yesterday!  I took a great online class last night from Jen White at Scrapper's Workshop called "Pick up Your Pen" and learned lots of new tricks!  I have used the pen before for extractions and making my templates but I did not know that you can switch between the pen tool and the direct select and convert point tools by holding down ctrl and alt!  What a timesaver.  I thought it was such a pain to switch over each time with my mouse and the whole time I didn't even need to do that!  Thanks Jen!  The class and this coooold weather inspired me to make some flower shapes.  The set includes a bunch of flowers, some leaves and stems.  The preview does not show it but each of the flowers below also has an accompanying "dotted" shape outline also.  Like this:

example

Then I made a set of layer styles you can apply to the flower shapes in bright colors and pastels.  Layer the flowers and create a unique element!

And I did include .pngs and image tiles for the flowers and styles so my non PS/PSE users can use them if they like.

CU Vintage Valentine Cards

I had a rare 2 hours to myself today after I dropped the Little Girl off at preschool.  What to do with myself?  I contemplated going to the craft store as I still have gift cards from Christmas that I haven't used.  But instead I decided to go to the antique shop.  I was looking for antique lace for a kit that I'm working on.  I didn't find any lace but I did find some wonderful treasures!  I really do not know a thing about antiques, and there are some items that do not interest me at all. I have no idea what I am looking at most of the time or its value.  I just wander around until I find something that looks interesting.  I found several gorgeous old doilies and hankies that I just had to pick up.  I was a bit disturbed that I recognize a lot of the "antiques" from my younger years.  I mean, I am only 40 but there were a lot of games in beat up boxes and books that I remember having growing up.  I found a great Chinese Checkers game that was exactly like one my Grandma Alice had and we always played when we went to her house.  Good times....

I found a great little black dress that was all sequins and beads, circa early 1960's.  The tag said size 8, which in today's sizes looks like it would be about a size 4.   HUH?  That's right, I typically wear a size 4 or 6 today but if I was an adult in the 60s or 50's I would probably be closer to an 8-10.  There is an interesting article about Marilyn Monroe's dress size on Snopes.  Anyway, I digress.  The reason I am telling you this antique shop story is that I came across a booth that had several vintage Valentine's postcards for sale.  I think I stood in that booth for half an hour reading the cards.    They were all from very early 1900s.  There was no street address or zip code on the postcards, just the name and city, state of the addressee.  I guess the postmaster knew where everyone lived in their town and did not need an address.  And the penmanship was gorgeous on some of those cards.  I think it is a shame that we don't write notes or cards much any more.  Most communication is through email, phone, text message, TWITTER!  lol.

This post is becoming quite the book!  To shorten this long tale, I bought 4 of my favorite postcards from that stack and scanned and extracted them for you.  In the TOU that accompanies the cards in the .zip I typed what each card said on the back.  I thought it was interesting, take a minute to read the lovely notes that were sent to dear friends 100 years ago.

Cracked Paper Tutorial and CU Overlay

Wow, I know that nothing I give you today will come close to the popularity of yesterday's freebie! I couldn't believe when I woke up this afternoon I had sooo many comments and downloads of the Metal Bead Alpha. Over 1100 downloads and counting! Thanks gang, I'm so glad you like them!

I'm trying something different tonight and attempting to post a tutorial right here on the blog. I have been playing around trying to come up with an overlay that gives a background paper a folded, aged look. I think it turned out okay so I figured I would share how I came up with it. This tutorial is for Photoshop but you can probably adapt it to work in your program. If you have a hard time reading the screenshots, hopefully if you click on the images you can see them better. I used my overlay from a looong time ago "cracked sticker on electrical box". It was photographed by me at one of my son's little league baseball games. (Original Post)

SC_Cracked

I opened this overlay in CS3 and then used Image > Adjustment > Invert (Ctrl-I):

Shot1

Then I use my magic wand with the tolerance set to 25 and contiguous unchecked and click on a dark part.

Shot2

I then choose Select > Modify > Expand and enter a value of 5.

Shot3

I then delete the dark part.

Shot5

I then go to Image > Adjustments > Brighten/Contrast and move the slider to about +60 to +70.

Shot6

And that's it! Save it as a .png file so you preserve the transparency. Then you can apply it to your background paper or photos. Play with the blend modes until you achieve the look you want. I like to use Screen, Vivid Light, Overlay, and Hard Light. It's going to depend on the paper you are applying the overlay to. You can also lower the opacity if you like.

Example

Here's another example. I added a 2px drop shadow to the overlay but I'm not sure if like it with a drop shadow. Maybe an inner shadow would have been a better idea.:

Example2

If you find there are too many cracks or they are too big you can either increase the number when you expand the selection or you can erase some of them with the eraser tool. If you would like more cracks, don't expand the selection.

I encourage you to play with different "cracked" photos. You will find several different textures through the links on the right side of my blog. And if all this seems like just too much work for you, I have zipped up the overlay so you can use it if you like. In the .zip is the original cracked sticker overlay for you to play with and my finished version. I hope you can use it!

CU Metal Bead Alpha

Well I will tell you the story of my brilliant idea.  The other night while working I was doing a walking beat (the only two stores open in my town after midnight are Wally World and Meijer) and I always have to check the craft section for inspiration and ideas.  I have seen these cool beads a million times and I know that there are many digiscrap stores that sell them.  I bought a set of plastic ones when I first started digiscrapping and I was not too happy with the set that I bought.  Anyway, I thought the metal block beads were cool and I thought how neat it would be to make an action that would create a bead with your choice of font and letter.  The idea was that I would come up with a metal layer style and try to come up with a realistic looking block.  But that didn't happen yesterday.  They all looked like a square, not three dimensional, and the layer styles didn't help much.  So while working last night I went back to same store and paid $3 for the set that I photographed and extracted today.  They are much more realistic and of course everyone can use them, not just the PS/PSE users.  So I think this was the better choice, less frustration and better results.  I used my twine for the preview, but you can put the beads on a chain or ribbon or your own string.  They are all in individual .png form and around .8 to .9 inch each.

CU Cupid Bear Template

Yes, I'm cheating again.  I had a great idea that I worked on all afternoon but it turned out to be a flop and I didn't want to skip a post today so I tweaked my Teddy Bear template and made him into a little Cupid bear.  I changed his nose, and feet, added wings and a bow and arrow.  Tomorrow I will try to work on that brilliant idea again.  We'll see how it goes.

CU Bracelets and Heart Charm Set

Today's freebie is a set of bracelets that I photographed in the light box and extracted.  Then I made a little charm template to hang from your bracelet.  The template includes the gold frame, the photo template, and the glass and is in .psd and .png format.  You just clip your photo to the template layer and you have an instant charm!  The photo in the preview is of my 4 year old when she was less than a year old.  I can't believe how much she has changed.  The curly hair is gone and much darker now, she has lost her "baby fat" and is becoming quite the little diva.  The time goes so fast!!

p.s.  To the "anonymous" poster who wanted someone to give him/her links on how to recolor the shoestrings I cannot give you links if I you are anonymous and I don't have an email address.  Please email me (it's in the TOU) like my other readers do if they have a question.  I understand you may be frustrated that you cannot figure out how to color the strings but I will be happy to email you links.  You seemed kinda angry in your comment.

Another CU Angel Template

I think this is my third angel template but she is my favorite so far.   I used several different Filter Forge Filters but the wings were drawn by me in CS3 and the bow was from my Christmas bow collection, still available (search Bows).  The .zip is huge for some reason, probably because the layers are not just flat greyscale shapes.  You color her gown and bow (and the rest if you like) to match your layouts or kits.

I survived my first week of night shift without incident (if you don't count the explosion on my first night, lol).  And I managed to get enough sleep and still work on some freebies for you.  So I think it will all work out just fine!  Tonight's freebie is a set of 6 greyscale shoelace wraps.  They are very large, right around 3600 pix wide each.  All photographed in the new light box and extracted by me!

Bringing back some Oldies but Goodies!

I am still getting adjusted to the new shift but I have to thank those of you who suggested melatonin.  I take one on my way home from work and head straight to bed.  It seems to be working pretty good!  I haven't had much chance to work on anything new but I have the next couple days off so I should be able to come up with something!  Tonight's freebie is a set of Love Bugs.  They were all made with my templates that I offered AGES ago.  Of course they are all still available if you want to make your own.  I know I have a lot of new readers who may not have gone back that far to find these little googley eyed critters so I packaged up a bunch of bugs with a Valentine theme.  They are all in .png format and okay for CU/SFO/SFH/PU.

Today's freebie is a layered template that I call Love Monkey because he looks like he wants to give you a BIG HUG!  Speaking of hugs, I would like to say thanks to all the readers who had suggestions and concerns about sleeping during the day.  I did end up taking a Tylenol Sinus PM pill before I went down this morning because I had a headache and was stuffy.  It did the trick and I'm ready to head out in the 30 below windchill weather tonight! Ribbon Flower2 Action for PS/PSE

Well I survived my first night of 3rd shift, but found it isn't as easy to sleep during the day as I thought it would be. I've had 3 hours so far and hope to get a nap before going back in tonight. So to spend my insomnia filled day I created a little action for Photoshop and PSE that looks like a double-sided ribbon flower. You choose the color, pattern, or back ground paper for each portion of the ribbon and choose the color for the brad in the middle. When the action is finished, the brad is on a separate layer so you can discard it if you would rather use a button or other embellishment for the center of your flower. Or you can layer two or more flowers for a more three dimensional effect. I'm so sorry for my non-PS/PSE users, the next freebie will include something you can use!

Edit: noon on 1/14/09 - one of the actions in the PSE5 folder was mispelled.

Tool Time #5

Today's freebie is a set of 6 background papers and 10 screw/rivot heads that I created in Filter Forge using some fantastic filters I found there.  The papers include a pegboard, sandpaper, doodads multiplied by a hundred, wood, metal plate, and camo.  The drop shadows and embedding on the screw heads are for preview purposes only.  This closes out the Tool Time kit with plenty of odd things for your guy layouts and kits.  They were very popular and I am so happy you all like them. Oh, and if any of you are on Facebook, I would be glad to chat with you there.  I am new to Facebook but totally addicted.  I think I like it better than Twitter.  You can search for me by my email address that is included in the TOU for each freebie!

Tool Time Part 2

Wow, everyone seems to like the guy stuff.  I am so glad, I never know how something is going to be received.  I had time to extract a few more tools of the trade this evening while baking 8 dozen cookies for work.  I have only 2 days left on Day Shift then I go to 3rd shift.  So it is a tradition when someone leaves or leaves the shift they buy pizza.  And I plan on doing that on Saturday but I also had requests for my chocolate chip cookies.  So after dinner I made the cookies and disappointed all three kids when I didn't save any dough for them to eat (that is the best part, lol!)  Anyway, enjoy Part 2 of Tool Time and I do have lots of fasteners (screws, bolts, nails, doo dads, etc) that I will post next.

From Valentines to Chihuahuas to tools, you never know what direction I am going next do you?  Tonight and for the next several posts I am giving away a bunch of tools, fasteners, do-dads, etc.  And if I have time I'll even throw in some background papers.  I thought it would be fun to do a kit for the guys so I am calling this theme "Tool Time".  It's mostly just a bunch of junk I have lying around my garage and basement that I decided to photograph in my new light box!  I hope someone can get some use from them.  Drop shadows are for preview purposes only.

Check this out

Ok, I'm headed to bed after a very disappointing Redbird loss but I wanted to show you what our halftime entertainment was tonight. This guy cracked me up! This video from Youtube has him doing Michael Jackson but tonight he did the Village People. Oh my goodness I was laughing so hard. There is only one guy (the one in the middle) and the rest are mannequins. He calls himself the Amazing Christopher.

CU Chihuahua Layered Template

We are headed to Peoria tonight for the ISU/Bradley basketball game and I didn't have time to photograph and extract anything.  So I am switching gears today and offering a little (UGLY) dog that resembles a Chihuahua.  It was requested by Deanna who I mentioned the other day on my blog who spent two days downloading and commenting on my freebies.  She has Chihuahua dogs so I made one specially for her but you all can grab him too.  Isn't he fun?  LOL.

CU Valentine Flower Set

I am finding that I use the new light box every single day!  Today's freebie is a set of flowers for your Valentine layouts or kits.  There are some silk roses and some silk flowers to layer to make a unique element.  I also included a button and brad for the layered flowers.  Here's a couple examples:

SC_VflowerExampleSC_VflowerExample2

Once again these are HUGE.  There are only a handful of flowers but the zip is a whopping 58 mb!  Resize, recolor, etc. as needed!  And the layered flowers are jaggy but that is how they are in real life.  If you resize them smaller it is not as noticable.

MAKE YOUR OWN CU CANDY HEARTS

No post yesterday as we went to the ISU game and watched the Redbirds march to their 14th win! They looked good too, hopefully they will do the same to Bradley, our arch rivals. So today I set up the light box and photographed some little candy hearts. The sayings on all of them were basically unreadable. So I did some photo editing and removed the sayings so the heart is plain. There are all 6 colors included in the zip and they are all 3" by 3". Then I made 36 "sayings" to place on the hearts. I ran a couple filters on the text and saved the sayings as a PS/PSE .abr file and as individual .pngs. You pick the color, pick the saying and stamp it on the heart! I also encourage you to make your own sayings or even make an alpha by placing a letter on each heart. Cute? Of course you can also stamp some custom shapes on the hearts, arrange them into a frame or other element. I thought they were fun and I had fun making them. I hope you can find some use for them. Not all sayings are shown in the preview and drop shadows for preview purposes only.

CU Valentine Bows

Thank you all for the wonderful birthday wishes!  I had a fantastic birthday which started with waking up a 5am to a clean house!  My 15 year old and her friend who spent the night stayed up until 3am cleaning up. Oh wow... I always say that is the only gift I ever want and this was the first time I actually received such a thoughtful and wonderful gift!  Of course they then ruined it by giving me granny panties and an awful outfit that may be 100% polyester with the elastic all around the waistband to signify that I am getting so old.  LOL.  Anyway, we had pizza at work for my Birthday and my dear friend Barb made cookies.  So all in all 40 isn't so bad I guess.

This evening I photographed some little Valentine bows and extracted them.  Now that Christmas, New Years, and my birthday is complete I can focus on a new Holiday.  They are BIG too.  40mb for 8 bows, you will surely want to make them smaller.  Drop shadows are for preview purposes only.

More CU Retro Overlays

I hope you all survived the New Year's Eve celbrations!  We had a great time at a party with good food, good drinks and great friends!  While yesterday was New Year's Eve, today is My Birthday Eve.  LOL.  It's one of those dreaded birthdays too.  That's right, 40 years ago tomorrow (Jan. 2nd) I was born.  UGH.  Nothing special planned.  I'm working my regular shift and the guys are buying my lunch.  Awww, very nice of them.   So tonight's freebie is the second set of Retro Overlays but it is really set #1 since I went out of order with yesterday's set.  Oh well.  Enjoy.
